What is Squonking (Bottom Feeding)?

Squonking or bottom feed is a relatively old style of vaping. It will appeal to anybody that uses an RDA and drips. With a bottom feed device, there is no need to be dripping the whole time; you just squeeze the silicone juice bottle. Perfect for if you are driving, or out and about.

There any tens of thousands of different squonkers or bottom fed devices out there, and around the same number of RDA that are compatible with bottom feed devices

The device

There are two main categories of Squonker or bottom fed device, Regulated or mechanical.

What does this mean? Well its simple(ish).

Regulated Squonk (Bottom fed) mods:

A regulated mod has a circuit board protecting the battery and devise and usually has various settings you can adjust Ohm’s, wattage, Temp control and pre-heat functions etc.

Un-regulated or Mechanical Squonk mods:

Mechanical mods supply power straight to the atomizer, without being passed through a board. This means you can’t adjust the wattage or anything actually. You control the type of vape, through the type of coil you build. This is my personal favorite type of squonker, I love it with the right build, RDA, mod and battery you have a hard-hitting device with flavor for days...

You require an Ohms reader(Or regulated mod) to check your coil resistance, you also need to be aware of battery safety ie battery drain, headroom etc. With the internet at hand, this is relatively easy, I use steam-engine to check my built against my battery, to make sure I am safe.

Unregulated modes  are for more advanced users, but are still very safe as long as you follow some basic rules.

  • Check you your coil resistance
  • Check your battery using Ohms law or use a battery drain calculator i.e. steam engine

The bottle

There are many different shapes, sizes and colours of Squonk bottles constructed from different materials.

Choices in Material:

  • Polypropylene
  • Silicone

Choices in Colour:

  • Unlimited(Black, green, blue, pink, white, transparent and the list goes on and on)
Choices in Size:
  • anything between 6ml up to 10ml dependant on what fits well in your mod.
Choices in Shape:
  • Round
  • Square
  • Half Moon

My favorite is 6ml round super soft silicone bottles

The Contacts

Contacts can be made from any metal that conducts electricity well. Some examples

  • Copper(Most common)
  • Beryllium copper
  • Silver plated copper
  • Gold plated Copper
  • Silver
Most commonly used is copper, as it is widely available, low cost and a very good conductor. But copper gets dirty easily and dependant on use requires regular cleaning to ensure it is performing at it best. I strip and clean my mods once a week to ensure they are in tip-top shape. You can clean using a metal cleaner like Brasso, peak or even all gold works well.

The battery:

Dependant on the device, most common battery size is 18650. 20700 are now also more widely used as they have a larger capacity. You also have a choice of single or dual(Parallel or series) battery.

I prefer single cell 18650 as this ensures a nice compact device. I use Sony VTC5A batteries, currently one of the best on the market for mechanical mods.

I think Squonking came about as someone was sick and tired of dripping but loved the flavor an RDA. So they made an RDA you no longer need to drip on.

I love Squonking and I'm sure you will too! If you have any questions please let me know and I will be happy to help.Click to contact us!
